How the Retina and Macula Works

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It captures visual images and converts them into electrical signals, then transmits them to the brain through the optic nerve, facilitating vision.

The macula is a small, highly sensitive area at the retina’s center. It is responsible for sharp, detailed vision and is crucial for tasks like reading and recognizing faces. The macula contains a high concentration of photoreceptor cells, particularly cones, essential for color vision and visual acuity.

The retina and macula are integral components for clear vision, and any issues affecting them can impact visual function. Symptoms of retinal issues can vary depending on the specific condition, but common signs may include floaters or flashes of light, blurred vision, visual distortions, and dark spots or shadows. Sudden vision changes, difficulty seeing at night, or partial vision loss are also red flags.
