Glaucoma: A Stealthy Threat to Vision

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss or blindness. The most common type, primary open-angle glaucoma, develops gradually and often without symptoms until the late stages. Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is a key risk factor.

Congenital glaucoma is a rare but serious form present at birth. It results from abnormalities in the eye’s drainage system, leading to increased IOP. Symptoms may include excessive tearing, light sensitivity, and cloudy corneas.

Understanding the Risk Factors

Having one or more risk factors doesn’t guarantee the development of glaucoma, but it increases the likelihood. Common risk factors include:

  • Age: Glaucoma risk rises, especially after reaching 60 years of age.
  • Family history: A familial connection to glaucoma increases individual risk.
  • Ethnicity: African, Hispanic, or Asian descent elevates susceptibility.
  • Intraocular pressure: Elevated pressure within the eye is a significant risk factor.
  • Corneal thickness: Thinner corneas may indicate a higher risk.
  • Medical conditions: Individuals with diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure face increased glaucoma risk.
  • Eye injuries or surgeries: Past eye injuries or certain surgeries contribute to higher risk.
  • Myopia (nearsightedness): Individuals with high myopia have an elevated risk.

Treating Glaucoma with Precision in Trappe

As of now, there is no cure for glaucoma. Glaucoma management focuses on slowing or halting its progression, preventing further damage to the optic nerve, and preserving vision. Our approach combines cutting-edge technology with compassionate care and includes:

  1. Medications: Prescription eye drops or oral medications can help reduce intraocular pressure.
  2. Laser Therapy: Procedures like YAG laser treatments can improve drainage or reduce fluid production in the eye.
  3. Surgery: In advanced cases, surgical options, including Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGs), may be considered to improve fluid drainage.

Trust ReFocus Eye Health to guide you toward a future with clearer, brighter vision, one personalized treatment at a time.
